SALT, A FACTOR IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Salt is once again in the line of fire by being linked to childhood obesity. To put it plainly, when children eat salty foods or snacks they become thirsty and are likely to satisfy that thirst with sugary drinks, like soda.

It's not the table salt we might add to foods that is the problem because that added salt only amounts to about 10 to 15% of our daily salt intake. The problem seems to be that fast foods, snack foods, and processed foods contain a great deal of sodium.

  • Try to stay away from most canned foods, they contain a lot of salt.
  • Cook more fresh foods at home, save fast foods for once in a great while treats.
  • Encourage everyone to drink more water when thirsty.
  • Remember that even though fruit juice may be good, it still has a good deal of sugar.
  • Physical activity is a must!
