While I have no doubt that everyone does not have the same rate of metabolism, I do resent when fat people use their thyroid as an excuse. This is because I have hypothyroidism, lab tested and diagnosed by a number of doctors.
It is a disease and I would like to tell you what it's like to have it. I have now been without my thyroid pills for more than six months now. The TSH blood test is one of the tests to measure thyroid output of the thyroid hormone that your body needs. A normal reading should be no more than 5.0 A doctor may become alarmed to see a level that reads 50.o My last test read 195.0 This is near the end coma type bad.
I didn't need the test to tell me how ill I've become. The hair on my legs no longer grows. The naturally wavy hair on my head has straightened into a thin mass of course and dry looking hay.
The skin on my hands has turned into sand paper and no amount of lotion can help. The corners of my eyes have started to crust and crack and I am tired. Not just tired. I mean fall asleep at the snap of a finger tired. I almost always fall asleep in the bathroom even when only in there for a minute or two, so that I have bruises on my arms and bumps on my head from falling off the seat. I even have fallen asleep a couple times while standing up at work. My voice is almost gone in a permanent state of laryngitis, it's an effort to speak. To top it off these last couple weeks I am so swollen with water I can barely stand or walk, I can't make a fist and have huge bags under my eyes.
So you see being fat is not the only symptom of having hypothyroidism. I have seen a doctor this week and have started on a low dose of thyroid hormone till I get some blood tests done later this week. Even at a bumped up dosage it will take months for me to get back to normal.
Still even now I need to decrease the amount of food and liquid I take in or the blood pressure /diuretic the doctor gave me won't work like it was meant to.
