A study on brown fat has shown that it differs from our usual white fat in that the brown variety helps your body to burn calories, where as the white fat stores extra energy. Brown fat burns energy to make heat. They say that newborn babies have the brown kind to help regulate the heat in their bodies and they think adults have almost none of this "good" fat.
Studies done on brown fat in mice suggest that if we were to produce more of this brown fat in adults it would help to burn calories and halt obesity.
Two different studies have identified two different ways to generate the production of the brown fat and have discovered that brown fat comes from muscle and bone growth. The researchers were able to genetically alter the mice into producing the brown fat and they think within the next ten years they may have a way to do this with humans. So, what color is your fat?
