A lot of us have a sweet tooth and that makes dieting even harder, but once in awhile a bit of what you're craving on special occasions is OK.
If you find yourself in that situation take a small portion and force yourself to eat and chew very slowly. We usually get into trouble by eating too fast. Try to take as few bites as possible to satisfy that sweet tooth and if you know ahead of time that you'll be facing that chocolate cake, try to eat lighter during the day. Make sure that the foods you eat are low on the glycemic load list so that you'll be fuller and more satisfied beforehand.
If you elect to eat sugar-free foods check the ingredients on the label. Some artificial sweeteners like sorbitol have a laxative effect on your body. These are made from sugar alcohols and usually their names end in "ol". You don't have to avoid them, but don't over do it!
