SUICIDE LINKED TO WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

The New York Times has a great article that links suicide to bariatric weight loss surgery. According to the numbers that this study provided, suicide is about five times higher for people who have had this surgery, than in the general population.

Although they do not know the reason exactly for this increase, I would make a first guess that those people who had the surgery probably had unrealistic expectations of change after the procedure.

Most overeating is a result of emotional problems. These obese people don't eat because they are hungry, they eat because they are trying to fill some kind of hole or void inside. Making the stomach smaller does not address that issue.

I would think that findings such as these would lead to a lot more counseling, such as the kind that a person having a sex change operation would have to go through.
